The Soul or the World?

Mark 8:36-37 | 1 Timothy 6:10

There is a question that Jesus asked two thousand years ago, and which still resonates today with the same urgency, the same gravity, the same tenderness: “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet lose his soul?”

A simple question. But a question that can change an eternity.

We live in a world that is running. It runs after banknotes, after titles, after property, after success, after recognition. Getting up early, going to bed late, working hard—sometimes honestly, sometimes at any cost. The phone rings, business moves forward, the bank account grows… and meanwhile, something far more precious is quietly crumbling away: the soul.

The apostle Paul saw this coming. He wrote to Timothy with prophetic clarity: “The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.” Note well: he does not say that money is evil. God blesses his people with material resources. But the disordered love of money—that consuming greed, that blinding avarice, that unbridled desire for ever more—that is the trap. And Paul adds with sorrow: “Some have strayed from the faith and brought upon themselves many torments.” They had it all… except peace. Except meaning. Except God.

So, what is a soul worth?

Jesus asks the question already knowing the answer. A soul is worth more than the whole world. It is worth enough for the Son of God to leave the glory of heaven, take on our fragile flesh, walk our dusty roads, and die on a cross to redeem it. “What would a man give in exchange for his soul?” — Nothing. There is no currency sufficient enough. There is no bank account rich enough.

That is why Jesus’ question is not a condemnation. It is an invitation.

An invitation to be reconciled.

For deep down, the tragedy of the man who chases after money at any cost is often the tragedy of a man who has lost touch with his Creator. A man who seeks in material things what only God can give: deep security, inner peace, a reason for being.

But God has not resigned Himself to this distance. He has reached out His hand. In Jesus Christ, He has said to all humanity: “Come back to Me. I know you. I love you. And I offer you what no wealth can buy: salvation, life, reconciliation.”

Salvation is precisely this return. That moment when a person looks up from their calculations, their plans, their desires, and recognizes that there is One Greater than themselves—and that this Greater One calls them by name.

Dear friend,

Today, where is your soul? Behind all your plans, all your ambitions, all your financial concerns—is your soul well? Are you at peace with the One who created you?

The world you might gain will pass away. Titles will fade. Houses will wear out. Currency will lose its value. But your soul is eternal.

And God offers you freely what money can never buy: grace, forgiveness, eternal life.

Don’t let anything—not ambition, not the fear of lack, not the opinions of others—deprive you of what is essential. Win your soul. Everything else will follow.

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” — Matthew 6:33

And this is only the beginning.
